Campers love the creative atmosphere of Camp Hawthorne's Arts Program with its opportunity to perform and display their new skills. Each camper spends half the day working on their major, a concentration in their choice of either visual arts, performing arts or film. The rest of the day campers enjoy a variety of electives and traditional camp activities.
Performing Arts
Our performing arts program focuses on skill development for actors at every level of experience. Classes are fun, fast-paced, physical, and include improvisation, acting, characterization, scene study and theater games. In past years we have produced shows such as "Hook", "The Princess Bride", "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," and many Shakespearean selections which have included "A Midsummer Nights' Dream", and "Romeo and Juliet".
Visual Arts
Our visual arts majors receive technique instruction in several areas including: painting, drawing, sculpture, stained glass, mask-making, pottery, jewelry, stencil and print-making and public art.
Film
Campers joining our Film program have the unique opportunity to write, cast, direct, record, and edit their own film projects in our unique setting. Campers involved in this program use hand-held digital video cameras and a variety of computer-based and traditional editing techniques to produce film shorts, documentaries, art pieces and spoofs. (Campers interested in film can also attend our three-week Film Intensive program, which runs from June 23rd to July 13th. )
Electives vary each year but include sailing, outdoor adventure, sports, choral singing, improv, sketch comedy writing, short flim, fort building, outdoor cooking, creative writing, tubing, archery, and many more.
Art Show
On the last day of camp, parents are invited to join us for lunch and an afternoon art fair featuring a live theater production, film screenings and a visual arts gallery.
