Our Traditional Boy's and Girls Summer Camp Program
The General Camp Program is the traditional summer camp experience, including a wide range of sports, games, waterfront activities, arts, crafts and wilderness exploration. This program is perfect for campers who want to try it all, and experience the classic "summer away from home". Camp Hawthorne is situated on the edge of Panther Pond, surrounded by over 100 acres of pristine pine forest. With 2 1/2 miles of shorefront and a beautiful sandy beach, we are happy to offer some of the finest sailing, waterskiing, canoeing and waterfront activities in New England. Every camper finds a home in one of our rustic pine cabins, overlooking the water. We think it is important for campers to try everything, so each week we work with campers to create their own schedule. Different activities are rotated around so everyone spends some time with their bunkmates, some time with their coed age group, and some time with campers who share the same interests. And of course, the whole camp joins together each night for a giant all-camp activity like a group game, a talent show, a dance, or a campfire with songs and stories. Each year brings a new group of people with exciting new skills to share, but we always offer some classic camp activities:
In addition to our normal schedule, we often include special events and trips. In past years we have spent the day at the beach, visited a local town fair, and gone tubing down the Saco River. There are also opportunities for smaller groups to take overnight canoeing, rock-climbing, ocean sailing, hiking and rafting trips. Sundays are relaxed, beginning with a sleep-in morning and a late breakfast of homemade donuts. A short, nature-oriented service at our outdoor chapel follows. We are a non-religious camp that stresses humanistic values. Campers of all faiths feel comfortable at our friendship service. No Maine camping experience is complete without a true wilderness adventure. This year we're offering our campers a 4-day canoe trip on the St. Croix river, following Session I and Session II. Check out our Adventure Trips for more details.
