Learn to Sail in Maine at Camp Hawthorne!
Every summer, Camp Hawthorne offers intensive sailing programs for campers interested in technical and recreational sailing. Campers who join this two-week, overnight program spend half of each day recieveing sail training, and the other half of the day joining in a wide range of games, sports and activities with the members of our General Program. For the first week, all sailors are taught basic boat safety, rigging and basic sail handling with an instructor in the boat. As they achieve greater levels of competency, sailors may pass their "mates" or "skippers" test. Skippers are then allowed to take out sailboats without staff. During week two, we hold a series of formal races, ending with a final regatta. In the past, we have also participated in a multi-camp regatta with other area camps. Our sailing fleet is comprised of of 5 Flying Juniors, 15 and 17ft Hunter sloops, a 17ft. Precision sloop, a 14ft JY sloop and two sailfish.
